Why We Exist
Great railway photography is about far more than recording trains.
At 1Z10 we believe the most memorable railway photographs combine light, composition, atmosphere and storytelling to create images that leave a lasting impression. The railway provides the subject; photography provides the creativity.
Our purpose is to inspire railway photographers to see beyond the obvious, explore new ideas and continually develop their skills while sharing the enjoyment of the railway with others who share the same passion.
Creative Railway Photography
1Z10 is a community of photographers brought together by a shared enthusiasm for creative railway photography. Our members have different backgrounds, experience and photographic styles, but we are united by a common desire to create thoughtful, imaginative images rather than simply record passing trains.
Whether photographing high-speed main lines, heritage railways or remote rural branches, we look for the quality of light, strong composition, atmosphere and the relationship between the railway and its surroundings.
Every photograph should tell a story. We don’t simply photograph trains. We create photographs in which the railway plays the leading role.
Railway Photography Together
Photography is often seen as a solitary hobby, but we believe it becomes even more rewarding when experiences are shared.
Throughout the year we organise railway photography trips across Britain, visiting both famous locations and hidden gems. These outings are opportunities not only to discover new railway photography locations but also to exchange ideas, learn from one another and enjoy the friendship and camaraderie that have become hallmarks of 1Z10.
Many lasting friendships have grown from days spent beside the railway.
Learning and Inspiration
Inspiration lies at the heart of everything we do.
Our quarterly competitions, annual awards and online galleries encourage members to experiment, challenge themselves and continually raise the standard of their work. The emphasis is never simply on winning, but on learning from one another and celebrating creative achievement.
Although members’ photographs are regularly published in the railway press, recognition is never the primary motivation. Our greatest reward is creating images we are proud of and inspiring others to do the same.
A Community, Not a Club
1Z10 is deliberately informal.
There is no formal membership, no committee, no constitution and no bureaucracy. Instead, we are a welcoming railway photography community built on creativity, friendship, mutual encouragement and a genuine love of Britain’s railways.
As new photographers join and fresh ideas emerge, those values continue to shape everything we do.
